Superb riding and vast mountain landscapes in the Vercors Regional Natural ParkRef CY03

The Vercors is the largest mountain range in the northern Pre-Alps. Majestic cliffs, deep gorges and countless caves strangely hide a green mountain landscape of vast open valleys, forests and pastures, perfect for mountain biking. A mountain plateau, surrounded on all sides by sheer rock faces, the Vercors often gives the impression of being suspended high above the rest of the world.

Day 1: Villard de Lans - Herbouilly

Itinerary start: France Bike Trips services begin on day 1 at 9:30am in Villard-de-Lans. On request we can book the previous night's accommodation for you and organise a transfer from Grenoble.
We leave Villard de Lans by its small streets and lanes, then cross the Loubière forest to reach Corrençon. A climb through the Essanteaux woods takes us past the "lapiaz", deep faults dug by erosion into the limestone, access points for cavers to explore the depths of the Vercors...
Our day ends at our overnight accommodation in Herbouilly, a wooden « auberge » tucked away in the forest.

  • Distance covered: 25 km
  • Altitude gain: 400 m
Day 2: Herbouilly - Col de Carri

The second day begins with a great descent to Tourtre. From there, we head to La Chapelle en Vercors, focal point of the « Resistance » movement during the second world war. After reaching Le Révoulat, we begin a long flat section through villages, glades and small woods typical of the Vercors region. The descent to the Col de Carri is on forest tracks used for cross-country skiing in winter.

  • Distance covered: 30 km
  • Altitude gain: 500 m
Day 3: Col de Carri – Vassieux-en-Vercors - Return to Villard-de-Lans

The morning begins with a climb through dense woodland. After crossing the meadows of Bournette, our route leads us to the small ski station of Fond d'Urle. We then climb up to the Fontaine du Chien, before reaching the natural limits of the Vercors, with it’s cliffs that plunge to the Diois, home of the famous Clairette de Die. The southern end of the Vercors is a land of contrast, with alpine landscapes to the north, and Provence landscapes to the south, the Ardêche and the Rhône Valley to the west.
The journey ends with a descent to Vassieux-en-Vercors, another focal point of the « Resistance » movement. Transfer to Villard-de-Lans.

  • Distance covered: 25 km
  • Altitude gain: 600 m

Itinerary end: France Bike Trips services end in Villard-de-Lans at around 4pm on the last day. On request we can book the following night's accommodation and organise a transfer to Grenoble.

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.
