A cycling tour in the footsteps of the Ardéchoise, with its passes, back roads and lost, authentic villages...Ref CR5B

Legend has it that the Ardèche department is the one in France with the highest proportion of winding roads, the department where finding more than 300 m of straight road is a real challenge! Add to this its very low population density, its pivotal position between north and south, and the resulting variety of landscapes, and it's easy to see why the Ardèche has become such a renowned cycling destination. For almost 25 years now, thousands of cyclists have been setting off every year for the legendary Ardéchoise, which has become the biggest cycling event in France. This tour takes you on a selection of the Ardéchoise's most beautiful routes: lost, winding, playful, linking charming villages, these little pearls allow you to discover all that the Ardèche has to offer: a huge diversity of atmospheres. The green Ardèche to the north, flanked by large hills punctuated by volcanic peaks such as Mont Gerbier de Jonc, the high plateaus of the Cévennes, and the sun-drenched southern Ardèche...

Each day you choose between three different routes with varying distances and altitude gain (1, 2 and 3 wheels).

Day 1: Saint Félicien - Laviolle

Passes of the day

- Col du Buisson, 917 m (level 1)
- Col de Mayres, 603 m (levels 2 and 3)
- Col du Serre, 600 m (levels 2 and 3)
- Col de la Justice, 681 m (levels 2 and 3)
- Col de la Faye, 1020 m (levels 2 and 3)
- Col de la Fayolle, 887 m (level 3)
- Col des Quatre Vios, 1149 m (level 3)
- Col de Mézilhac, 1119 m (levels 1, 2 and 3)

Highlights

- Departure from Saint Félicien, historic base of the Ardéchoise
- The landscapes of the Vivarais hills and greenhouses
- The verdant Glueyre valley (level 2)
- The panoramic route of the Eyrieux gorges (levels 2 and 3)

Day 2: Laviolle - Borne

Passes of the day

- Col de Juvinas, 721 m (levels 1, 2 and 3)
- Col de la Croix de Millet, 773 m (levels 2 and 3)
- Col de la Croix de Bauzon, 1307 m (level 1)
- Col de Loubaresse, 1154 m (levels 2 and 3)
- Col de Meyrand, 1369 m (levels 2 and 3)

Highlights

- The winding road at the foot of the Butte rocks
- Crossing the Ardèche river
- The pretty Echelette bridge and the Lignon valley
- The villages of Largentière and Loubaresse (levels 2 and 3)
- Riding at the foot of the Massif du Tanargue

Distance and altitude gain:

  • Level 1: approx. 60 km / approx. 1500 m.
  • Level 2: approx. 95 km / approx. 2400 m.
  • Level 3: approx. 115 km / approx. 2600 m.

Note: for level 3, you can add a variant that takes you further south, along the banks of the Ardèche, towards Vallon Pont d'Arc (+ 25 km / 400 m of positive ascent).

Day 3: Borne - Les Estable

Passes of the day

- Col de la Chavade, 1281 m (levels 1, 2 and 3)
- Col de Gage, 1091 m (levels 1, 2 and 3)
- Col de Moucheyre, 858 m (level 3)
- Col du Pranlet, 1367 m (levels 2 and 3)

Highlights

- The birthplace of the King's river, the Loire!
- The bucolic Lac d'Issarlès, at 1000 m altitude
- A day meandering between the sucs, those characteristic little volcanoes!
- Passing at the foot of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, source of the Loire River

Distance and altitude gain:

  • Level 1 : approx. 70 km / approx. 1400 m.
  • Level 2 : approx. 115 km / approx. 2200 m.
  • Level 3 : approx. 120 km / approx. 2400 m.
Day 4: Les Estables - Devesset

Passes of the day

- Col de la Scie, 1193 m (levels 1, 2 and 3)

Highlights

- The Recoumène Viaduct (level 3)
- The passage at the foot of Mont Mezenc, between Velay and Vivarais
- Les roches de Borée (levels 2 and 3)

Distance and altitude gain:

  • Level 1: approx. 65 km / approx. 1000 m.
  • Level 2: approx. 100 km / approx. 1800 m.
  • Level 3: approx. 130 km / approx. 2400 m.
Day 5: Devesset - Saint Félicien

Passes of the day

- Col du Faux, 1021 m (levels 1 and 3)
- Col du Buisson, 922 m (levels 1, 2 and 3)
- Col de Juvenet, 681 m (level 3)

Highlights

- The Doux Valley
