Road bike France

Our classic the other way round, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean crossing legendary and wild passesRef CR16

From the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, coast-to-coast, from the Bay of Biscay and the Basque Country to Catalunia: The road bike crossing of the Pyrenees is our second major mountain crossing in France after the Route des Grandes Alpes through the Alps. On this tour, we tackle the route starting on the Atlantic. From west to east, the wild mountain massif between France and Spain impresses with its great variety of landscapes: The rolling hills of the Basque Country (with their steep gradients!), the imposing peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées around the Tourmalet, the forests of the Ariège and the Mediterranean vegetation of the Albères and Canigou. From small secret passes to the major passes of the Tour de France (Portet d'Aspet, Peyresourde, Tourmalet, Soulor, Aubisque, Marie-Blanque), this road bike tour offers the opportunity to discover the Pyrenees in the opposite direction to our classic west-east route. We have selected friendly, typical accommodations in great locations, where meals and comfort are waiting for you after the strenuous days in the saddle.

The French Pyrenees from west to east

Information on the West-East route

Several legendary passes are steeper and more demanding from the west side than from the east side, as seen on our classic route from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic:

  • Col de Bagargui, 7 km with gradients > 10%
  • Col de Marie Blanque, 3 km with gradients > 10%
  • Col d'Aubisque, an average gradient of 7.2% over just 16 km of route
  • Col du Tourmalet, 130 meters more climbing from Luz St Sauveur
  • Col de Menté, 850 meters in altitude over 9 km, an average of 9.1%
  • Col de Portet d'Aspet, 5 km with gradients between 9 and 13%

Some others, such as Aspin, Peyresourde and Pailhères, are a little easier.

It should be noted that the logistics of the west-east route are more complicated for guests coming from German-speaking countries is than that of the east-west route.
